RNID awards Remark!'s work 4 stars!
In the RNID’s magazine 1 in 7 February/March issue, Remark! was proud to see our work being complimented by awarding a 4 star for the Tate Mulimedia tour.
Here is an extract of the article.
"Tate Modern has launched a new handheld multimedia device that provides information in British Sign Language (BSL). The device fits into the palm of your hand and is easy to operate. Simply push the buttons to get information in BSL on the 28 different works of art in the gallery. There are also optional subtitles. Each piece of art has a menu of three choices and each Item lasts about two minutes.
The information can easily be paused and replayed so you shouldn’t feel like you are looking at a screen rather than looking at the art. One of the choices is a discussion between two people, which was a real bonus. It was great to have something personal that you can relate to as well as learn from. You can pick up the free palmpilot device at Multimedia Guide desk, and then look for the artworks indicated with a BSL symbol at any time during opening hours.
An ID deposit will be required, however, such as your driving licence. Tate Britain and Tate Liverpool have also launched their own multimedia tours. I think it should be made mandatory that all public museums follow suit, as this would enable deaf and hard of hearing visitors to enjoy the same access to exhibitions as hearing people.
Awarded 4 stars."
