Deafinitely TheatreDeafinitely Theatre Launch DVD

Deafinitely Theatre – the UK’s only Deaf-led professional theatre company – was granted a People Award through the Wellcome Trust Engaging Science funding programme to produce Playing God. Created and performed primarily by Deaf people, Playing God focuses on two couples who become entwined in a debate around cochlear implants – one hearing and working in audiology, and one Deaf with a Deaf baby. The play powerfully explores the moral, ethical and philosophical issues for families who are faced with such a decision over implants.

Playing God was developed by Paula Garfield and co-written by Rebecca Atkinson. At the time the play was written, headlines such as “Bionic ears threatening deaf culture” had appeared in the national and scientific press, featuring stories about the potential impact of cochlear implants on Deaf identity.

The play toured theatres around the UK, followed by a two-week run at Soho Theatre in London.

Remark! produced the DVD version of Playing God.  The filming itself was a complex operation with a 4 multi camera set up with hundreds of metres of cabling required! Due to Remark!’s expertise and knowledge of being as unobtrusive as possible we successfully navigated this logistical nightmare without disturbing any of the actors, allowing them to focus on their characters and performance with minimal interruptions from the crew.

The DVD was then professionally encoded with a full menu system and subtitles; the DVD has received much acclaim from viewers.
