Our training department offers British Sign Language (BSL) courses from Level 1 (beginner) to Level 6 (advanced). We also offer diploma courses in sign language interpreting, which will allow you register with the NRCPD as a Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI).

We offer a unique learning experience where you will be immersed in Deaf culture with native BSL users at our modern and quirky office. Our London office is at 18 Leather Lane, near Farringdon.

All of our BSL teachers and assessors are Deaf, native BSL users. This means our students benefit from a real and native insight into the Deaf community and its language.

We’ve been doing what we do for nearly 20 years, which has allowed us to design and deliver courses that integrate both practical and theoretical elements of learning.

We offer both Signature and iBSL accredited qualifications.

We also deliver Deaf Awareness training, which is popular with organisations that have Deaf or hard of hearing employees. Deaf Awareness training can help facilitate better communication between Deaf/hard of hearing and hearing employees within the organisation.

  • Short answer: Four. Here at Remark! we hold classes for BSL Level 1, BSL Level 2, BSL Level 3 and BSL Level 6.

  • No, American Sign Language is quite different to British Sign Language. They are distinct languages. In fact, whereas American and British English are mutually intelligible, ASL and BSL are not mutually intelligible.

  • Each student has their own learning pace. We would say on average it takes 3-4 years to become fluent (BSL Level 6) based upon learning 3 hours a week.

  • Yes, however due to the inherent nature of BSL being a 3D language, we would always recommend learning face to face with a Deaf teacher when you can.

“We had a wonderful experience taking an extended BSL level 1 course taught by Remark! at Google’s London offices. I was particularly impressed with our tutor, Lorraine, her enthusiasm and experience made learning BSL even more fun than it would otherwise have been”

Our Remarkable In-House BSL Teachers

All of our BSL teachers and assessors are Deaf, native BSL users. This means that our students benefit from a real and native insight into the Deaf community and its language.

Bob Rose

BSL Level 1 – 6 and Deaf Awareness Trainer

  • My name is Jagjeet Rose, but just call me Bob! The reason being I love Bob Marley and I listen to his music all the time. I am passionate about teaching my language, BSL, and giving people the opportunity to become fully bilingual or build on existing language skills.

Over 20 years ago I signed up to a course where the teacher was Deaf and I thought to myself, ‘Why can’t I become a teacher?’. After qualifying I began working in Bedford college, teaching BSL Level 1 and 2. A few years later I gained a PGCE and a Maths degree whilst studying BSL Level 6 at the same time.

My passion for linguistics continued to develop and enhance my BSL teaching. I still recommend all students learn linguistics, whether they are Deaf or hearing.

I teach BSL levels 1 - 6 and deliver Deaf Awareness Training.

Deborah Van Halle

BSL Level 1 - 2 and Deaf Awareness Trainer

  • I was born proudly Deaf and grew up with hearing family and friends and learnt how to communicate with both Deaf and hearing people from a young age. I went to an oral Deaf school (the teachers focused on speech and lipreading) but during break time my friends and I would use British Sign Language to communicate. Through Deaf friends and the Deaf community, I learnt how to sign!

When my son was 6 years old, his school's headteacher asked me to teach the children simple signs. I explained that I wasn't a qualified teacher. She then paid for my courses and qualifications, to become a teacher.

I have now been teaching for 25 years! I enjoy meeting students and have been working here at Remark! Training for 8 years. The Training Team is brilliant and always support one another.

Alison Wherry-Alimo

BSL Level 1 - 6, Deaf Awareness Trainer and A1 Assessor

  • Alison is a profoundly Deaf native BSL user. Her parents are hearing, and she has an older Brother who is also Deaf. She has over 26 years of teaching experience and particularly enjoys teaching Level 3 and 6.

Alison enjoys taking part in several different outdoor activities in the spare time and also supporting other Deaf members in her community.

She enjoys working at Remark! because being a BSL teacher is rewarding for her as that way she is able to remove the communication barriers facing in our society. She also enjoys building a rapport with the students and seeing them develop.

Mark Hooper

BSL Level 1 - 6, Deaf awareness Trainer and A1 assessor

  • Mark started working in the hearing world, but he didn't feel fulfilled in his career, as BSL is his first language. He decided to work within the Deaf community and started as a communicator guide. He was inspired to become a BSL teacher by his half-sister who teaches English for the RAF, stationed in Germany.

Mark has over 15 years of teaching experience; he is an A1 assessor for internal Level 6 exams, and a verified external assessor for Signature.

He enjoys working at Remark! due to the varied teaching opportunities, working with students all of abilities. Remark! Training has a tight-knit team, and he enjoys building a rapport with his students and watching them thrive in their BSL journey.
