Level 1 Certificate in British Sign Language
Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language is designed to enable learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL). A range of topics are studied that involve simple, everyday language use. This Level 1 course provides an introduction to BSL and is suitable for all learners.
This course is a hybrid course between our Foundation course (no exams) and our full Level 1 course, which completes the Signature Accredited Level 1 Qualification. If you book for the Foundation option, you can opt into examinations later for the extra £236, which covers both the Signature examination fees and the extra tutor time required for our full Level One 24-week courses.
Summary
This qualification is designed to enable you to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts, participating in more detailed and open-ended exchanges. The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real-life and daily experiences. You will be able to deal with more routine language tasks and have a sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks.
Units
The course is divided into three units and candidates are required to pass all units to gain the qualification.
The units include the following topics:
BSL 101 Introduction to BSL – meeting people, using numbers, weather, transport and directions
BSL 102 Conversational BSL – at home, people, animals and objects, using numbers, interests and activities
BSL 103 BSL at School, College or Work – getting around, exchanging information, refreshments, and using numbers
Assessments
Assessments take place during normal class time and the assessment fees are included in the course price.
